Octopus and contactless payment
The Octopus card is Hong Kong's stored-value transport card. Tap it on the MTR, buses, trams, ferries and many minibuses, and use it in convenience stores, cafés and vending machines. You can buy one at MTR customer service centres or add a mobile Octopus to your phone's wallet. Many MTR gates and buses also accept contactless Visa, Mastercard and other cards.
MTR (Mass Transit Railway)
The MTR reaches almost every neighbourhood, from the airport and Disneyland to the New Territories and the border. Trains run from about 6am to 1am and signs are in English. Remember: eating and drinking are not allowed in stations or on trains.
Trams, Star Ferry and buses
- Ding-ding trams: double-decker trams along Hong Kong Island's north shore with a low flat fare — pay as you exit
- Star Ferry: a short, scenic crossing between Tsim Sha Tsui and Central or Wan Chai
- Buses and red or green minibuses: go where the MTR doesn't, such as Stanley, Repulse Bay and Sai Kung
- Outlying island ferries: depart from the Central Piers to Lamma, Cheung Chau and Lantau
Taxis and ride-hailing
Red taxis serve most of Hong Kong, green taxis the New Territories and blue taxis Lantau Island. Fares are metered; tunnel tolls and large luggage cost extra. Have your destination written in Chinese to show the driver, and ask whether card or Octopus payment is accepted before you ride. Ride-hailing apps also operate.
