Language
Cantonese and English are official languages, and Mandarin is widely understood. Signs, menus in tourist areas and public transport announcements are in English. A friendly 'm̀h'gōi' (thank you / excuse me) goes a long way.
Everyday etiquette
- Queue patiently for buses, taxis and lifts
- Stand still on MTR escalators and hold the handrail; give priority seats to those who need them
- Speak quietly on public transport
- Ask before photographing people, especially at markets and temples
- Accept business cards and gifts with both hands
Visiting temples
Dress modestly, speak softly and follow any signs about photography. Don't touch altars or offerings. It's fine to light incense — follow what locals do and place it in the burners provided.
Rules with fines
- No eating or drinking in MTR paid areas and trains
- No smoking in indoor public places, many parks, beaches and public transport interchanges
- Littering and spitting carry on-the-spot fines
- Importing e-cigarettes and heated tobacco is banned
Superstitions worth knowing
The number 4 sounds like 'death' in Cantonese, so some buildings skip the 4th floor, while 8 is lucky. Avoid giving clocks as gifts, and during Chinese New Year you'll see red envelopes (lai see) given for good fortune.
