Staying connected
- Tourist SIM cards and eSIMs are sold at the airport and convenience stores
- Free public Wi-Fi is available at many government venues, MTR stations and malls (look for Wi-Fi.HK)
- Useful apps: MTR Mobile, MyObservatory, Citymapper or Google Maps, OpenRice for restaurants and a taxi app
Power and plugs
Hong Kong uses 220V, 50Hz electricity and UK-style three-pin plugs (type G). Bring a universal adapter — most hotels can lend one.
Safety and health
Hong Kong is one of the safest big cities in the world, day and night. As in any crowded place, watch your bags on busy streets and at night markets. No vaccinations are required for most travellers; use insect repellent in summer and stay hydrated on hot days. Public and private hospitals offer high standards of care — travel insurance is strongly recommended.

Accessibility and families
The MTR, Airport Express and most malls are step-free with lifts. Hills, stairs and older buildings can be tricky with prams — a baby carrier helps. Many attractions offer child and senior prices.
